I photographed the dance company “Defining Movement” or “DefMo” over the course of three months as they prepared for one of their biggest performances. Awaaz, as you can hear DefMo’s president Chrissy Ziccarelli explain in the slideshow, is “the biggest student run show on campus”, celebrating South Asian culture. I wanted to capture the incredible amount of effort that goes into such a performance, from choreographing the piece, practicing for hours every week, and getting ready for the actual show. However, the story doesn’t end with the performance. DefMo is much more than a dance company, who practices hard to put on an amazing show. What becomes evident after spending time with the group, is that they really are a family, and the bond they have created through dance extends beyond the studio or stage.
